Union of the Bridal Chamber: Divine Play of Hieros Gamos

In essence, every creature in this world is a bundle of desire-energy and the entire reality of our experience is a radiant display of desire-energy; liberated from the dualism of subject and object this very energy is the Pure Joy of the Risen Christ – the Cosmic Orgasmic Bliss of the Beloved, the Holy One of Being.

In the love-play of two lovers, embracing in the awareness of the innate goodness and sacredness of their sensual and sexual expression – merging together as one body and soul, in the instant of the fruition of love-play, right then Pure Radiant Awareness dawns, consciousness liberated from thought and thinking, and all dualism of mental being: Perfect Thunder Intelligence.

Recognizing this and abiding in Pure Radiant Awareness, the mind or soul-stream is set free; however, returning to the dualism of subject and object, and self-grasping, which is the karmic continuum of the unenlightened mind, the mind or soul-stream habitually returns to its bondage.

Indeed, in the midst of love-play there is the experience of gnosis, the experience of enlightenment, as in the midst of many things in this life, yet with all of the millions and millions of people who make love, few are they who become enlightened or experience Divine Gnosis – the satisfaction and fulfillment of their inmost heart’s desire goes unrecognized, and desire-energy returns to the play of dualism, the dominion of the demiurge (cosmic ignorance).

The Union of the Bridal Chamber is a continuum of spiritual practice that plays with desire-energy, seeking to look and see the true nature of the objects of our desire, as well as the true nature of desire itself – kindling desire-energy, the fire of passion, we seek to ride the Fire Snake into Union with the Beloved, the fulfillment of our inmost heart’s desire. Thus, we bring desire-energy into the path and the play of desire becomes the Way to Divine Illumination.

Mystical Union with Partzuf:

According to the inclination of your desire, meditate upon the image of Our Lord or Our Lady as the object of your desire – your Beloved, and at the point of merging with Our Lord or Lady in Partzuf Meditation, first envision a mystical union as in the outer form of hieros gamos with a true lover; then, in fruition envision the image of Our Lord or Lady dissolving into fluid flowing light and pouring into your heart center – hold the fullness of desire-energy in your heart, and let the flame in your heart burn brightly, illuminating your body-mind.

Along the same lines, envision your actual lover (or an object of your desire), and then as your desire is kindled envision them magically transformed into Our Lord or Our Lady, and enter into Union with the Beloved as above.

You can take this practice one step further – envision yourself arising as Our Lord or Our Lady in light-body, the compliment to your actual lover (or an object of your desire), and then envision your actual lover (or object of your desire) and as your desire is kindled envision them magically transforming into the Other – and enter into Union with the Beloved as the Divine Consort, as described above.

Take up the practice of Union with Our Lord or Our Lady as their Divine Consort and let the Divine Passion wax hot, utterly burning you away so that only the Beloved remains, the One Anointed with the Supernal Light of God. This is the essence of the mystery of Hieros Gamos and was the way of Our Lady with Our Lord.

*The image of the partzuf that is used must be fashioned according to your desire, as though Our Lord or Lady appears as your version of the “ideal lover.”

Seeing the Divine Consort:

When you look upon your lover, or upon any beautiful person that kindles your desire, view them as the manifestation of the Divine Consort, your Beloved – see the world filled with emanations of the Divine Consort, as though a Great Palace of Pure Bliss.

When you see two people in flirtatious exchange – see the Divine Consorts at play, viewing them as Our Lord and Our Lady, and taking delight in the play of courtship.

When you see two lovers together – see the Divine Consorts at play, viewing them as Our Lord and Our Lady, and taking delight in the play of lovers together.

This very same play of passion extends throughout nature and the entire world – look and see, and take delight, in the play of desire-energy in all forms that it assumes, view the world as a Palace of Great Bliss (Cosmic Orgasmic Bliss), and let the forces of passion be kindled in you and burn hot in you: as the delight of desire arises, offer it up to the Beloved, see the Beloved in all you desire and see all you desire as the Beloved, and consciously direct all your desire-energy into the Beloved.

Cultivating desire-energy in this way, take the desire energy into your continuum of practice of Union with Our Lord or Our Lady as their Divine Consort.

*In the midst of this practice look and see the innate goodness and sacredness in the play of desire-energy, and recognize the innate blessedness within the play of desire-energy, and the sensual/sexual experience, when liberated from shades and shadows (klippot) to just be what it is: a radiant display of pure energy, pure joy, that naturally and spontaneously arises. If you find shades and shadows arising surrounding the play of desire, or issues surrounding sensuality, sexuality and the body during this continuum of practice, take up Giving and Receiving Meditation as part of the continuum and liberate the holy sparks bound up in those shades and shadows.

Union of Love-Play:

Cultivating the continuum of Union with Our Lord or Our Lady as their Divine Consort, when you take up love-play with a lover receive them as the physical manifestation of the Beloved and make love to them as the Beloved – let go of yourself in the love-play with your lover, and let the love-play itself become your prayer and meditation, your praise, thanksgiving and adoration of the Beloved, your worship of the Beloved: in a word, let your love-play be a holy sacrament. (Offer yourself up to the Beloved – receive your Beloved and be received by your Beloved.)

*In the Sophian Gnostic tradition love-play between two lovers is considered a holy sacrament and a method of prayer and meditation, a form of worship.

**When two initiates take up this practice together amazing experiences can unfold in the midst of love-play; if a couple is seeking to conceive a child it has been said that a soul of a higher grade can be drawn in through this practice. Frequently this practice is joined to theurgical workings by initiates, allowing love-play to generate Light-power that is extended as invisible spiritual assistance to other beings – when there is an awareness of the innate good and sacredness in love-play it is a great generator of Light-power.

Offering Up Desire-Energy:

When you are filled with desire, envision the image of Our Lord or Our Lady in your heart center, and direct the desire-energy to the Beloved in the sanctuary of your heart – as the desire-energy is uplifted to the heart center and received by the Beloved, envision that his or her light-body in your heart becomes brighter and brighter, and that your whole body becomes filled with Divine Light, so that your own body is transformed into Divine Light.

Then take up the simple chant of the Beloved (Yeshua Messiah or Kallah Messiah), with a conscious intention that all beings by blessed by this Divine Light – envisioning the Divine Light shining from you and going out into all directions of limitless space, just as the sound-vibration of the chant pervades the space surrounding you.

In remembrance of the Original Blessing in which all beings are conceived, give praise and thanksgiving to the Divine, to the Beloved, and pray for the happiness of all beings.

Offering Up Desire in Union:

Alternatively, envision the Spiritual Sun in your heart, gathering your consciousness and desire in it, and envision that you magically arise in crystalline light-body; then take up the chant of the compliment to your Beloved, the Divine Consort of your Beloved, and as you do envision that you are magically transformed into the image of the Divine Consort.

(*If your Beloved is Mirya, you become Yeshua – with an inner robe of white brilliance and outer robe of purple, your body like the sun, with an aura of rainbow glory. If your Beloved is Yeshua, you become Mirya – with an inner robe of white brilliance and outer robe of crimson red, your body is like sunlight with an aura of rainbow glory – you are wearing ornaments and bearing the holy jar, with a veil over your head. The chant becoming Lord Yeshua is: Adonai Yeshua, Yeshua Messiah. The chant becoming Lady Mirya is: Kallah Messiah, Shekinah Ha-Messiah.)

Then, taking up the opposite chant, the chant of your Beloved, envision that a ray of light shoots out of the Spiritual Sun in your heart and magically appears in the space before you as the radiant image of your Beloved, the force of your desire manifesting as the object of your desire. As you chant and envision your Beloved before you, let your desire and love grow and increase for your Beloved – let the passion carry you, and see the Beloved smiling upon you, desiring to receive you, and envision the image of the Beloved growing brighter and brighter, the love of the Beloved streaming out upon you as rays of light, and your own light-body becoming brighter and brighter with the blessings of the Beloved.

When you feel as though you can no longer contain yourself and the rapture is carrying you away, take up the chant: Ah-Ha-Yah, with the wish to merge with the Beloved completely; then as the chant is brought to cessation, envision yourself as the Divine Consort dissolving into fluid flowing light and pouring into the heart of the Beloved – merging completely with the Beloved.

Abide in this union as long as you can – as your mind moves, envision yourself as the Beloved with countless beings surrounding you, as though a great assembly of disciples, and feel their undying love and desire for you, and your immeasurable love for them, and taking up the chant: Yah-Ha-Va, envision the fulfillment of their desire, their love, just as your fulfillment, all becoming radiant from the blessings of light streaming from your light-body as the Beloved, then dissolving into fluid flowing light and pouring into your heart, merging with you as the Beloved.

(In the assembly surrounding you, friends and loved ones are to your left, strangers to your right and enemies before you; all manner of admixed and dark beings are below, and the holy and enlightened ones of the Divine Order are above – all are blessed and received just the same.)

Now envision that a great ray of light shoots from your heart as the Beloved, and the entire luminous assembly reappears, but now as male and female pairs entertaining the Mystical Union of Great Bliss – no longer divided into categories or different from one another, but all fulfilled and happy, all rejoicing in the Divine Presence of the True Light, El Elyon. With the conscious intention that this Light and Joy be extended into all realms, worlds and universes of the Entirety, take up the chant: Yahweh Elohim Tzavaot.

Then, with the chant: Yah-Ha-Ah, envision you, as the Beloved, and the entire luminous assembly disappear in blissful rapture like a rainbow in the sky – abide in the Perfect Delight of this Pure Radiant Awareness as long as you can.

When you mind moves, pray for the fulfillment of the inmost heart’s desire of all beings – the happiness of all beings, and dedicate the merit of the practice to all beings. This is the practice of Offering Up Desire in Union.

*All of the foregoing practices are methods of kindling desire-energy preparing for the practice of Union of the Bridal Chamber which follows.

Union of the Bridal Chamber:

Abide in Primordial Meditation and then envision yourself spontaneously arising in crystalline light-body, with the central channel-way in place from crown to root, and the interior stars (or centers) as most subtle spheres of light in rainbow spectrum, with solar and lunar channels weaving, intersecting at the points of light – the light of the centers not fully radiant.

In the midst of the emerald green heart star envision a Yod and He, the Yod resting on top of the He, the Yod formed of white brilliance and the He formed of intense ruby red light – rays of this light shining out of the heart, far brighter than the light of the interior stars.

Take up the chant of the Divine Name: Yah, and as you do this envision the Yod ascending through the central channel and the He descending – as they pass through the interior stars it is as though they ignite them and the interior stars shine brighter. See the Yod become established at the very top of the channel-way, in the crown star, and see the He become established at the very bottom of the channel-way in the Root Star – both still intensely brilliant.

Now, take up the chant: Ya Ha Va Ha, Ah La Ha Yi Ma, and envision the Yod magically transforming into the image of Lord Yeshua standing on a red rose throne on top of your head and the He transforming into the image of Lady Mirya standing on a red rose throne in your root – be aware of the sentient beings of the Entirety surrounding Our Lady and the holy ones of the Pleroma of Light surrounding Our Lord. (The assembly of beings is not visualized at this point, however – one is just aware of them.)

With the chant: Yah Ha Sha Va Ha Ma Ra Yah Ma, envision that these images of Our Lady and Lord shine even brighter, and envision that a stream of diamond-like white brilliance shines down the central channel to your heart center from Lord Yeshua and envision that a stream of ruby red brilliance shines up the central channel to your heart center from Lady Mirya, the love of our Lady and Lord pouring into your heart center. As the white brilliance descends, envision that all of the three upper centers and transformed into white brilliance, and as the ruby red brilliance ascends envision that the three lower centers are transformed into ruby red brilliance – as these two streams of light-love meet and mingle in the heart, envision that the heart is transformed into a radiant celestial pink light.

Take up the chant: Ad Da Na Yah Ma Sa Yah, and envision that the white brilliance continues it’s descent through the three lower interior stars, transforming them into radiant celestial pink light; then take up the chant: Ka La La Ha Ma Sa Yah, and envision the ruby red brilliance continues its ascent through the three upper interior stars, transforming them into radiant celestial pink light. (In this way all of the interior stars are filled with the light and love of Our Lady and Lord – the Messiah.)

Now, take up the chant: Ya Ha Sha Va Ha Ma Sah Yah, Ma Ah Ga Da La Ah, and envision the images of our Lord and Our Lady dissolving into fluid flowing white and red light, respectively, and pouring through the central channel into the heart center – see the Root Star as a ruby red center of light that remains in place and the Crown Star as a center of white brilliance that remains in place, but as the light passes through the other interior stars see them dissolved and their light-power carried into the heart. As these two flows of light-power reach the heart, see a whitish pink rose throne forms there of one thousand petals, and see the image of Our Lord and Lady in Mystic Embrace magically appear on the rose throne – they appear “sky-clad” in bodies of white and red light, with a golden aura of solar grace around them, and the pink heart center as an aura surrounding the entire image. (In this image of mystic embrace, the Lord is seated and our Lady is in his lap facing him – his hands are around her waist and her arms are around his neck, and they are kissing.)

Become aware of all beings of the Entirety and Pleroma gathered around the Blissful Image of the Bridal Chamber within your light-body, as though your light-body encompasses the Entirety and Pleroma, and taking up the chant: Eh-Hey-Yee-Hee, gather your consciousness into the Blissful Image of our Lord and Lady – in other words, with this chant, in an instant, you become the Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace with the Beloved. (“Eh” sounds like a long “A.”)

*Above are all of the holy ones and immortals of the pleroma, and all about and below are all sentient beings of the entirety – those on the same plane as you (in the form of Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace) are on established in the Way and those below are all not yet established in the Way, those above being the Way, Truth and Light, as are you in union with your Beloved as the Divine Consort.

Take up the holy chant: IAO Ah Da Na Yah, and envision the bliss of your Mystic Embrace pouring out as pink light upon the assembly of countless beings filling limitless space, all beings taken up in your Divine Rapture of Pure Joy. Envision them becoming brighter and brighter, passing from bliss into bliss, until all is a ocean of brilliant light surrounding you, no longer pink light but rainbow glory; and so also you pass from one bliss to another, each greater than before – then, in the instant of ultimate bliss, shift your intonement to “Ah,” intoning it three times, at the fruition of which you, in union with the Beloved, dissolve, disappearing into the ocean of light, the Pleroma of Light: abide in this union as long as you can.

When your mind is set into motion again, envision that you magically arise in Jeweled Body of Glory, all centers shining like bright jeweled stars, threaded like light-beads by the central channel, with radiant celestial pink light flowing through the channel-way and with a great sphere of white brilliance above your head.

Gathered in your heart center, as the Spiritual Sun within the heart center, focus your attention upon the Root Star, and take up the chant: Kallah Messiah, Shekinah Ha-Messiah, and as you do this envision a ray of solar light going down and striking the Root Star – then see the Root, Navel and Solar Plexus Stars dissolve, their light-power ascending into the heart.

Then, taking up the Chant: Adonai Yeshua, Yeshua Messiah, envision a ray of solar light shooting up and striking the Crown Star, and the dissolution of Crown, Brow and Throat Stars, their light-power descending into the Spiritual Sun in your heart.

Now chant: Ah-Ha-Yah, and envision that a pillar while brilliance descends from the sphere of white brilliance above – your crystalline light-body fill with white brilliance and as though within the pillar of white brilliance (diamond-like light sparkling with rainbow hues), with the Golden Orb of Spiritual Sun shining in the center.

Taking up the chant: Abba-Imma, Yeshua Messiah, Kallah Messiah, Io Adonai, envision that the Spiritual Sun becomes a brilliant orb of pink light and envision that this Divine Light and Love goes out from you into the entire world – all beings being touched, blessed and uplifted by this Light and Love of the Messiah.

Then, intoning: IAO-OAI, envision the entire world becoming this Holy Light and envision that it dissolves into fluid flowing light and pours into the orb of pink light in your heart; then envision your light-body and pink orb dissolves into the pillar of white brilliance, which is then drawn back up into the white brilliance above with the cessation of the chant – all then disappearing like a rainbow in the sky. Abide in this union as long as you can.

When you mind moves again, give praise and thanks giving to Divine Being, and pray for the happiness of all beings – the fulfillment of their inmost heart’s desire in the Divine Rapture; then dedicate the merit of the practice for the benefit of all beings, all for the sake of their joy as the Pure Joy of the Beloved. This completes the Union of the Bridal Chamber.

This is the basic continuum of the Union of the Bridal Chamber to which we shall add further practices later.

May all beings experience the happiness they seek; may all beings be blessed with the Perfect Joy of the Bridal Chamber – amen.

Continuum of the Bridal Chamber

Integration with daily living:

One aspect of the integration of the Union of the Bridal Chamber is given above – “Seeing the Divine Consort.” Yet, as with all Union Meditations one walks in the world as the emanation of the Partzuf, in this case as the Divine Consort, and one sees all that appears as the Body and Palace of the Beloved; hears all sound as the sweet voice and chant of the Beloved; and receives all thoughts and emotions arising in the mind as the innate display of the Wisdom of the Beloved. Uniquely, all desire is the desire of the Beloved for the Beloved, the radiant energy-intelligence of the Beloved.

Remember your Beloved throughout the day, and take up the Beloved’s chant in your mind frequently – serve your Beloved in all beings, in all that you do, as though all is courtship and love-play with the Beloved.

All circumstances, situations and events see as the courtship of the Beloved with you – all drawing you into Mystic Embrace and Union. *Love without condition!*

Union of Sleep and Dream:

Envision yourself as the Divine Consort, and laying your head on your pillow, envision that you lay your head in the lap of the Beloved, going to sleep in this way.

Union of Awakening:

Remember your practice of going to sleep, remember your Beloved as the first thought upon awakening and arise as the Divine Consort – hear the Beloved speak your name as the Divine Consort and intone the name of the Beloved once; all that you do after arising do as the Divine Consort.

Taking Sanctuary:

The visualization of Holy Sanctuary with this practice is Our Lord and Our Lady in Mystic Embrace upon the whitish pick rose throne (with a glorious rainbow aura about them), with the image of the Mother and Child behind and above (usually akin to the Woman of Light); they are surrounded by four Great Serafim that appear like great dragons: golden, red, blue and green; surrounding this is the circle of the twelve saviors with shekinah consorts, and then circles of patriarchs and matriarchs, prophets and apostles all in male and female pairs; surrounding these are all manner of divine beings in male and female pairs – all in blissful union.

Enoch and Elijah are on either side of Our Lord and Our Lady, their great radiant auras being the manifestation of their shekinah consorts; St. Michael and St. Sarah are before them, with Joseph of Arimathea in between holding the Grail and Spear.

The four archangels stand in the gates of the Palace of Light, joined with shekinah emanations, and above Our Lord and Our Lady is a great sphere of white brilliance, which is the glory of the Union of Imma-Mother and Abba-Father, the Holy One of Being.

All who appear are on rose thrones, though a deeper color of pink than that of Our Lord and Our Lady. This image fills endless space in all directions – the Palace of Great Joy. (This is the Palace of the Bridal Chamber.)

Taking sanctuary, become the Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace and abide in sanctuary in this way – joyful grace.

Union with the Holy Tzaddik:

Envision the Holy Tzaddik arising as the image of the Beloved and envision yourself as the Divine Consort in Mystical Embrace – the chant of the Holy Tzaddik is love-play and the Tzaddik pours into your heart at the fruition of the chant.

Palace in the Heart:

Envision the Palace of Great Joy, all in your heart, and become the Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace – the Spiritual Sun shining from your love-play with the Beloved. (The visualization of you as Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace on the rose throne without the Palace is enough, but the visualization of the Palace generates more energy.)

Filled with Light and Love in this way, you can extend blessings to people and places, envisioning this Light and Love pouring forth as the radiance of rainbow glory.

Essential Union with the Palace:

Abide in Primordial Meditation – then gather yourself into the Spiritual Sun in your heart and envision yourself magically arising in the crystalline light-body with three centers, Brow, Heart and Navel, white, pink and red. (Thus, the golden orb of the spiritual sun has a pink aura.)

Take up the chant: Yah-Ha Ma Sa Yah, and envision that a ray shoots up the central channel from the Spiritual Sun, magically appearing as the Palace of Great Joy on top of your head; Our Lord and Our Lady in Mystic Embrace on Rose Throne at your Crown, so that the central channel is like the stem of the rose and you are “wearing the Palace like a hat.”

Then, take up the chant: Ah-Ha-Yah, envisioning the light of the brow and navel gathering into the Spiritual Sun in your heart, and the dissolution of your light-body, and as the light of the Spiritual Sun, envision you ascend and merge into the Sacred Heart of the Divine Consort in Mystic Embrace with your Beloved. Abide in this union as long as you can.

As the Divine Consort, take up the chant of your Beloved: If Magdalene, Ka-Ah-La-La-Ah-Ha Ma Sa Yah; if Yeshua, Yah-Ha-Sha-Va-Ha Ma Sa Yah.

Taking up this chant, envision the Light-Palace as though perched on top of a great cosmic mountain with countless sentient beings surrounding it; the chant, as the energy of your love-play invokes the descend of white brilliance from above, pouring out though you and the Beloved in Mystic Embrace, and raying out to the entire luminous assembly of the Palace; when the entire assembly of the Palace is radiant with Supernal Glory, shift to the opposite chant of yourself as the Divine Consort, and envision all the sentient beings below receiving blessings in the form of rays of pink light and then rainbow glory.

Then, taking up the chant: Yah-Ha-Ah, envision all beings draw up in divine rapture, all becoming fluid flowing light that pours into your heart as the Divine Consort, and envision the entire Palace of Light dissolve and pour into your Sacred Heart, and then the image of your Beloved dissolving and pouring into your heart as the Divine Consort – then envision that you dissolve and ascend as light, merging with the Light-presence of Diamond Being above. Abide in this union as long as you can.

When your mind is set into motion again, give praise and thanks to El Elyon, the True Light, and adore your Beloved; and pray for the happiness of all beings, remembering the Beloved in all beings – then dedicate the merit. This concludes the Essential Union with the Palace of Great Joy.

Wedding Feast:

Celebrate the Wedding Feast, the Holy Eucharist, at least once a week, and partaking of it receive it as the blessing and grace pouring out of your love-play with the Beloved – the Holy Feast of your Union with the Beloved as the Divine Consort.

Nectar of Bliss:

The practice of the Nectar of Bliss, as given in the continuum of Union with the Red Maiden of Light may also be used in this continuum. Stirring sweetness into the tea with the dagger is the delight of your union with the Beloved as the Divine Consort, and drinking it is receiving the blessing and grace flowing from your courtship and love-play. (Instead of the dagger, some initiates use the wand to stir in the sweetness when practiced as part of the continuum of Union of the Bridal Chamber.)

*Generally speaking, as with all advanced continuums of spiritual practice, we seek the blessing of our Holy Tzaddik to take up this continuum, and with this practice there is both an inner and a secret empowerment.

This continuum requires a strong and stable recognition of the Ain Nature of Mind, as the force of desire-energy generated by it is very potent and can be intoxicating if we have not learned to abide unmoved, without attachment and aversion.

Let us pray for the happiness of all beings; amen.

The Divine Consort & the Beloved: The Sacred Dance

We do not have to have an actual love or spiritual consort to take up the continuum of Union of the Bridal Chamber or to explore the mystery of the Hieros Gamos – first and foremost, the mystery of Hieros Gamos is inward and spiritual, seeking the liberation of desire-energy from self-grasping, and the dualism of subject an object. Ultimately speaking, we are both male and female, and we are whole and complete in ourselves – the idea that someone is our “other half,” as though we are only half a person without being in an actual relationship, is sheer ignorance. In truth, our happiness is not in any object of our desire or in any person, but rather our happiness comes from within ourselves. It is true that objects of desire serve as vehicles through which we express our happiness or joy and, likewise, that being in an intimate relationship is an innate good of life and a great blessing, but nevertheless the source of our happiness is in us and it is this we must come to understand.

We do not have to have an actual lover or spiritual consort to practice this continuum, however if we do have a spiritual consort who is inclined to a similar continuum of practice we can take up mysteries of the arayot (sensual-sexual mysticism) as taught in the Kabbalah – these very mysteries being an innate part of teachings associated with this continuum of practice. When we do not have and actual lover or spiritual consort, this is a continuum of a “Right-hand Path Consort,” when we do have an actual spiritual consort and engage directly in sensual and sexual play as part of the continuum, it becomes a continuum of the “Left-hand Path Consort.” The continuum cast in the form of the Right-hand Path Consort has already been outlined, with just a hint of the method of the Left-hand Path Consort, so some practices of the Left-hand Path need to be added for those that may work with an actual lover or spiritual consort and desire to integrate their love-play and relationship to their continuum of practice.

*Here, perhaps, it should be said that there are several other continuums of practice that can be taken up from the perspective of the Divine Consort – for example, the Red Maiden of Light Continuum can be a practice of the Divine Consort. Also, it should be said that though teachings on Hieros Gamos are typically put into the context of heterosexual relationships, lesbian and gay initiates can modify the practices to match their inclination and desire – all as works for the integration of desire-energy and our sensual-sexual nature to the path as a Way.

Bridal Chamber Shrine:

If you are practicing the Hieros Gamos on an actual level – the outer level, let there be a shrine or altar in your bedroom where offerings can be made. Let there be appropriate images and sacred objects on it reflecting both consorts, and perhaps let it hold the five traditional symbols of the elements as used in our art of divine theurgy. Every time you engage in love-play, offer up lights and incense, and whatever else seems good, whether before, at some point in the midst, or afterward, all as you are inspired.

The shrine or alter can assume and number of forms – it is really all about a focal point of Divine Energy and remembrance of the play of Divine Consorts.

*In the Sophian Gnostic tradition the cross is often viewed as a symbol of Hieros Gamos, akin to the Lingam and Yoni in Easter traditions; however, many Sophians have adopted the symbol of the Lingam-Yoni, as well as the Vajra Bell and Vajra Scepter, which have a similar meaning – the Union of Male and Female, or Pure Joy. Some symbol of Mystical Union is typically in the shrine, and in many practice the bell and scepter play a significant role.

The Room with a Bed:

In the exploration of the mystery of Hieros Gamos on the actual level your bedroom is as a holy sanctuary of worship – it is as the Bridal Chamber; thus, it can be decorated and kept with this in mind, as though sacred and holy, yet a space of playful delight. It is ideal to have an environment that supports one’s spiritual practice as divine consorts, as though a palace of divine being, or the secret chamber of a priestess-queen and priest-king.

The bed, of course, is the true altar in the playful spiritual practice of consorts – and therefore initiates will tend to the bed, making it and such, as devotion to the Beloved.

All that one does tending to one’s bedroom is devotion to the Beloved as the Divine Consort.

A Sacred Rug:

Often spiritual consorts will have a sacred blanket or rug that may be laid out in different places for their love-play. It is acquired and consecrated for this purpose, and only used for this purpose. Animal skins, such as buffalo rugs, are often used, representing the uplifting of the bestial nature and the innate blessedness of life, but any soft rug or blanket could be used.

Special Clothing & Ornaments:

It is very common for consorts to acquire special clothing and ornaments that are worn when a more distinct ceremonial element is joined to love-play. The nature of such clothing and ornaments is, of course, all a matter of our own creativity and inspiration – all in support of our play as divine consorts with our Beloved in mind. Dressing up for our Beloved becomes adoration of the Beloved – an extension of our Gnostic worship.

The Art of Courtship:

The generation of light-power begins before the direct act of love-making; it begins in the play of courtship, which is beneficial in seasoned relationships as well as new relationships – taking up the play of courtship and flirtation, it becomes devotion and worship of the Beloved manifest in physical form. With creativity, inspiration and thoughtfulness spiritual consorts engage in courtship, kindling one another’s desire and nurturing one another – all as the Divine Consort in adoration of their Beloved.

*Spiritual consorts practice viewing one another as the physical manifestation of the Beloved perpetually and seek to relate with one another in love in this way – courtship naturally flows from this. Of course, it does not mean that there will not be natural struggles in our relationships, but rather it is a spiritual practice associated with exploring the mystery of Hieros Gamos, one that can significantly improve our relationships.

The Living Partzuf:

Sitting before one another, at the outset of love-play, let spiritual consorts envision one another as Our Lord and Our Lady – see your lover magically transformed into the image of the Beloved, and inwardly pray and commune with the Beloved, as though in a Union Meditation. Then, alternative back and forth, let the simple chant of the respective Partzuf be intoned (Yeshua Messiah or Kallah Messiah) – as this is done you see light streaming from your lover to you, your lover growing radiant with divine glory, and likewise see light streaming from you to your lover, you also becoming radiant with divine glory, this light being your expression of desire and love for one another. Then, let each envision the other dissolving and pouring into their heart center; then, with the mutual intonement of Yah-Ha-Va, both magically reappear as Our Lord and Our Lady.

As the Divine Consort in love-play with the Beloved, make love to your lover!

*Icons and statues are wonderful, but there is no greater representation of Divine or Enlightened Being than the living presence of a person – and one’s lover is the ideal image of Divine Being manifest with you in the material dimension. Praise the Holy One for the great blessing of living emanation!

Altar of Gnostic Worship:

On occasion, alternating from one time to another, let one consort abide passive as the object of worship – a living altar, and let the other take up their worship, worshipping the Beloved as they are inspired, pleasing the Beloved. (A special Wedding Feast may be celebrated in conjunction with this practice, or a theurgic working may be undertaken in this way.)

Rose Heart Connection:

Sit facing one another and contemplate your desire and love for one another, opening your hearts to one another; then envision the rose throne with Yod and He upon it magically appearing in your heart center, surrounded by the emerald green light of the heart center. Then let both consorts chant Yah together, seeing the Yod and He send forth their emanations to the Root and Crown, though remaining in their place in the heart center: the woman envisions the emanation of He to the Root and Yod to the Crown; the man envisions the emanation of Yod to the Root and He to the Crown, in this practice.

Alternating their chants, let each chant the name of their Beloved, Ya Ha Sha Va Ha Ma Sa Yah for the woman and Ka Ah La La Ah Ha Ma Sa Yah for the man; as they chant, let them see rays of light going from their heart to the heart of their Beloved, forming a heart connection.

Then let them intone Ah-Ha-Yah together, drawing down the Divine Light from above so that they are filled with the diamond-like light of Divine Being, and radiant with the Divine Light; when this is done, as they take up their love-play, let them imagine the expression of their delight as rainbow light filling the environment and streaming out into the world as blessings upon all being – the heart’s desire for the happiness of all beings.

When their love-play is brought to fruition, let them speak from their joy and Pure Being a wish for the blessing of all living spirits and souls.

Giving & Receiving:

Sit facing one another, close enough so that one hand may be placed on one another’s heart center – then perform Giving & Receiving Meditation with one another, purifying one another and blessing one another with your love. While doing this put one hand on the heart center of one another, and while envisioning the exchange of energy in the light-breath, also envision a flow of your love as light passing from your heart, through your arm and hand, into the heart center of your Beloved.

This is a method of self-purification, as well as the formation of a heart center connection uplifting one another in love.

See the entire space filled with Divine Light upon fruition, and in the Light of the Messiah take up your love-play as worship in the Presence of Divine Being: the One Life-power.

In fruition, pray all beings are blessed in this way.

Middle Pillar:

Sit facing one another and perform the Middle Pillar Meditation together – in fruition, envision your energy bodies merging completely, becoming one.

With love-play, ground this union, and at the conclusion send forth light and blessings to all beings.

Drawing Down Shefa & Ruhaniyot:

To draw down the shefa and ruhaniyot of a Sefirah (Light-emanation), chant the corresponding Divine Name together, and then chant the name of the corresponding Archangel, and invoke the Archangel and Order of Angels of the Sefirah – envisioning the divine energy of the Sefirah as Light-power of corresponding color filling the environment. Then, in this manifestation of the Divine Presence and Power, entertain your love-play as the grounding of the divine energy-intelligence in the world. (Candles of a corresponding color can be offered in one’s shrine; likewise, corresponding incense can be burned – all as seems good to you and supports your invocation.)

He is as the Lord and She is as the Holy Shekinah, Being and the radiant display of Consciousness-Force: Her joy, as the Holy Bride, is the extension of Light-power.

When your love-making is brought to fruition, send out this Blessing Power to those in need of it, and speak prayers corresponding to your invocation – if invoked for a specific purpose or person, speak this intention and envision the fulfillment of the intention together.

*Alternatively, you could hold the visualization of the letters of the Divine Name over your love-making, or in your light-body, and accomplish the same thing.

**Sometimes at the outset of this practice couples will perform the Middle Pillar Meditation together, and then invoke the intended Sefirah, or Sefirot.

(This can be used as part of the method for drawing in a soul of a higher grade when a couple is seeking to conceive; likewise, modified, it can be part of a ceremony generating a “magical child.”)


A Simple Mystic Embrace:

Take up the delight of foreplay, and bring one another to the point of arousal – then sit in the position of Mystic Embrace as Our Lord and Our Lady enthroned. (The female initiate sits on the lap of the male initiate and they are in union – his arms around her waist and hers around his neck.)

Continuing to kindle desire-energy and alternating the flow of breath with one another, as you inhale, draw the energy of your Beloved into you, and imagine that with your inhalation the energy is draw up to your heart and the top of your head – and envision yourself in light-body, as Our Lady or Our Lord, becoming a “Fountain of All-Joy.” (Do not focus on your exhalation in this practice, but let your exhalation happen naturally.)

As you do this, envision countless beings filling endless space surrounding you in the subtle dimension – all seeking blessings and grace, and envision rainbow light pouring out upon them. Envision that all of these beings grow more and more self-radiant as the light streams out to them, then envision they all dissolve into fluid flowing light and pour into your heart and the heart of your Beloved. (This you may do again and again, liberating many beings – continue as long as you can in Mystic Embrace.)

Then, when it is time, intone: Yah-Ha-Va together, with a conscious intention of extending this blessing and grace into the material dimension and world, and bring your love-play to fruition as the grounding and theurgic manifestation of this holy intention.

These represent some good beginning practices for spiritual consorts exploring the mystery of Hieros Gamos on the outer level – later I will post some more practices for spiritual consorts, but for the moment these are, no doubt, enough for a beginning.

May the Light of Love shine brightly and be a blessings upon all beings; amen.

While contemplating the thread on 'Healing of the Navel' something has been stirring in my heart. How do we rectify and unify sexual desire in the One? This contemplation has lead me back to this post.

A verse that came to mind while reading here was Matthew 5:27-28. 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

In the section 'Seeing the Divine Consort' you share: "When you look upon your lover, or upon any beautiful person that kindles your desire, view them as the manifestation of the Divine Consort, your Beloved – see the world filled with emanations of the Divine Consort, as though a Great Palace of Pure Bliss."

From what I am feeling from Matthew, Yeshua is speaking on the lower ego nature of sexual desire, that in a play of twoness, separate from the divine essence where what you are sharing here is in oneness, seeing the divine in everyone who catches ones eye so to speak. I sense this is something not exclusive to ones partner but embracing all as a form of Divine Consort?

I may have missed this section but what can be shared in regards to love play with ones lover who is not of the path? Would one inwardly view their lover as a form of divine consort as in context to what was shared above regardless of their knowing?

For me sexuality and the physical act of sex with a partner or not has been something that I have viewed as separate from the path partially due to not having a partner who shared similar views and my own reservations of viewing the divine feminine in such a "human" manner especially in terms of orgasm. This is limited thought on my part and a qlippah involving my own view of sex which I am working to liberate and integrate. I suppose it is a form of 'Madonna-Whore Complex' but with a spiritaul twist.

It is written "First and foremost, the mystery of Hieros Gamos is inward and spiritual, seeking the liberation of desire-energy from self-grasping, and the dualism of subject an object." What more may be shared on integrating this most basic of human desires as an offering of the One to the One in the One?

May our desire be an offering in oneness. Amen

Blessings to you in the Holy Light of the Messiah, the light of all prophets and apostles of God!

This body of teachings is, of course, an expression of the mysteries of the arayot in the Holy Kabbalah. I’ve not revisited these teachings in many years. I imagine today I might write of them in a more essential way. At the time the term “hieros gamos” had become popular in among many people in alternative spiritual circles, and often was misunderstood, so it seemed good to offer some clarification, expressing some spiritual and mystical practices that can transform sexual intimacy into a vehicle of devotion and realization.

First, concerning the mysteries of the arayot it is said that, ‘The way of the arayot is taught to two alone who are joined together in faith and love, having knowledge of the Beloved.’ Essentially, the full practice of the arayot requires two who have faith and knowledge, and who have mutual desire and consent to engage in a continuum in the way of the arayot together.

That said, quite naturally for initiates of the Gnostic Path, or ‘Straight Path,’ every true human activity is conceived of as transpiring in the One, from the One, to the One and for the One; the awareness of our innate oneness with the Messiah in God Most High, whether as a matter of faith or knowledge, is present in all that we do, and nothing is excluded. If, indeed, there were an activity that was not in harmony with the Holy One and Shekinah, that was not good and true, for example something such as rape, then we would have a need to turn away from it, and turn to God - returning to be One. However, all natural activities of human life, including our consensual sexual relations, would be taken up with the view of the Straight Path - all in the One.

Consider what we were just discussing in Shabbat discourse, seeking to see the good in people, seeking to see the image of God in people; if this is a spiritual practice we take up with strangers, all people we encounter, how much more so with those we are close to in life, and anyone we might be in an intimate personal relationship with? Through this simple practice we can uplift our relationships and uplift those with whom we are in relationship, and we may draw blessings to them, be a blessing in their lives.

While we cannot engage in the deeper mysteries of the arayot with someone who does not share the faith and knowledge with us, nevertheless we can seek to see the image of the Divine in them, and we can relate with them as an emanation and manifestation of the Beloved with us, loving the Divine that is within them, whether or not they realize the divinity that is in them, Likewise we can look upon people in our lives with eyes of holy awe and wonder - recognizing what a miracle, what a blessing from the Holy One, each person is, and what miracle, what a blessing it is that they are in our lives, and so love them accordingly.

There is much to be said to truly, genuinely, fully, loving the people in our lives, and certainly those with whom we are in an intimate personal relationship; it may be said that loving one another, loving others as we love ourselves, is the most essential expression of faith, the most essential manifestation of devotion in the Messiah and Holy One.

Yes, indeed, in the teaching of Yeshua that you cite he is speaking of seeing the beauty of others in a state of self-grasping, one that turns them into an object of our desire - a desire for self alone - and that in fact does not see and know and love the person, let alone perceive the divinity within them. Likewise he is teaching that ‘sin,’ the generation of negative karma, is not just in actions, but is in intentions, thoughts, imaginings, and he is pointing out that on an energetic level and effects on the soul - our consciousness and the reality of our experience - our interior life is as important as our exterior life, intentions, thoughts, imaginings as important as our words and deeds. More so he is proposing that the inside and outside need to be brought into harmony and united, and pointing out that the reality of the hereafter is largely determined by the interior, the inside, and our habitual patterns of thought and emotion - our mentalities. What he was teaching, in fact, is not so much about sex, but he used this because it is so common and so powerful in the experience of most people.

In this regard we may recall that Adonai Yeshua also uses the metaphor of a cup, reminding that first and foremost it is the inside of a cup that needs to be washed, not so much the outside; or rather, that washing the outside and not the inside accomplishes nothing - the cup remains unclean.

In closing I will share with you my brother that this desire in so many of us to have a special person in our lives with whom we can be most intimate is surely an expression of our deeper desire for the Beloved - our desire for a most intimate communion with the Divine in this world.

These are a few thoughts I can share with you.

With the topic of uniting Tiferet and Malkut, the inner and outer, I feel this ties together nicely. Thank you for drawing these teachings out. It has given me much to consider and has shed light on a topic that I have hoped to integrate into my being for some time.
